For years, health experts have recommended whole grains as a foundational part of a healthy diet. Whole grains contain lots of fiber, important nutrients like selenium, potassium, and magnesium, and eating them (instead of refined grains) lowers risk of chronic disease. Super great, right?
As Louis C.K. says: “Of course! But mayyyybe…”
An emerging (well, already pretty emerged) school of thought actually suggests that grains should be limited or fully avoided. Despite how completely “engrained” they’ve become in modern diets worldwide, grains have not always been an option for the human buffet. The dawn of agriculture was relatively recent in the scale of human history–compared with the past 200,000 years of anatomically modern human existence (and digestive adaptation), 10,000 years of agriculture isn’t all that much.
So, at the same time that whole grains are becoming more accepted in the mainstream (as a replacement for refined grains), more evidence is unfolding to show that no grains at all may be significantly better for human health.
The biological basis for saying no to grains is worth another entire post, so for now please turn to these resources if you’re interested in exploring this new perspective. And, in the interim, check out the yummy and totally doable grain-free meal ideas below.
